Amitabh Bachchan rose to fame in the early 1970s as one of the hot new faces of Bollywood and has since become one of the elder statesmen of Indian cinema, having won many major awards in his long career.

Amitabh Bachchan receives the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 11th Mumbai Film Festival in 2009.

As well as being an actor, Bachchan has also worked as singer, film producer and as a television presenter. He was also elected as a member of the Indian parliament from 1984 to 1987.

His career has not been without controversy: two years amid local elections in Uttar Pradesh he made a film in support of the Mulayam Singh government but his own party lost heavily in the elections.

Mr. Bachchan, With all respect to your creativity, talent and enormous energy, I feel that you are a living legend & inspiration to all fellow Indians. Your career and personal life had gone through very tough times; How have you handled or overcome those to continue your creativity in same manner ? What is your thought on taking up some roles for Hollywood movies to show the world your versatile talent ?

Title = Nepotism in Bollywood

Question:

You (Mr. AB) are most admired for rising to fame and making it without nepotism. How do you feel about nepotism stifling Bollywood talent now ?

I used to love Amithabachan as an actor; he was my favorite growing up in late 70's and early 80's. I remember getting glued to the TV every time his movies came up
However, lately, there is an arrogant aura about him that has ticked me off. Especially, rumors surrounding his son’s wedding that he did not invite any Muslims to the wedding, not only Muslims were not invited, but the police was instructed to keep them at a certain distance in order to keep the negative vibes away. Even though we Muslims are a sizable minority in India– second largest Muslim population in the world, but we are more than well represented in Bollywood. What a racist and perfect demonstration of cast system that is still alive, kicking and flourishing in India

Mrs. Zaman   November 9th, 2009 2006 GMT

Mr. Bachchan, Where do you see the film industry's influence in social and political venues moving? Should the industry be trying to influence the movie-going public or should they remain neutral? Is it possible to really be neutral? Should the industry do more toward preserving the Indian culture rather than following – or even jumping ahead – of Western culture? Thank you, Mrs. Zaman

Do you think Bollywood can or should move away from making movies that are love story-centric productions with mandatory song-and-dance sequences, and become something with a truly international appeal like Hollywood cinema?

Do you think that acting as a profession really adds value to a person ? What are the downsides of this profession ? Do you think spending millions of dollars of making movies is justified when a major section Indian populace dont have basic health and education ? What do you personally want to do if you could be the prime minister of India ?

Manish Chaturvedi   November 9th, 2009 2026 GMT

Dear Amitji,

I am a big fan of yours since my childhood and saw most of your movies. I would like to ask you:
1. How do you motivate yourself whenever you come across a big failure or problem?
2. What motivates you to perform better and better and reach new heights?

I believe your answers will help many people in their life.

Wishing you a bright future in Hindi Cinema... better than what you have achieved so far!

This movie start make crazy money but What i never understood is how they don't believe giving anything back to community. To be on news they'll pose for Camera w/ one poor child on street or make movie to motivate other people. But in real life they live in their Bubble. People in India worship him like a god. But all this god knows is to smile and pose for the camera

Amitabh Bachchan is the most prolific actor in the world, period. Very few superstars have the longevity of Amitabh plus the ability to play so many roles in so many movies. His popularity across all age groups is amazing. A true super star who ranks right up there, globally. After all the Indian sub continent along with Middle East, Far East and portions of Africa and North America (regions where Hindi movies are popular) represent about 30% of the world population!

Mr Bachchan,

I am originally from Mangalore but in Boston now for over a decade.

I have three questions :

a) What efforts are made by Bollywood to promote movies in the west ? Most people are ignorant of what happens beyond the border and balk when said that Bollywood produces more movies than Hollywood?

b) Since your son married Aishwarya, have you made attempts/ learnt to speak Tulu?

c) What was your reaction to the religious violence a year ago in your Daughter-in Law's hometown of Mangalore? which happens to be mine to.

Thanks

Derek

Hello to the great not only great but the one of the greatest actors of the world.Sir i like your movies specialy the movies which has moral values or the movies which give something to people that they go to learn it and try to adopt your sayings but these should be always positive and good.Oh sorry i forgot that you are only an actor not a script writer. And according to my thinking an actor acts just on the demand of script writer or film director or maybe producer. Its mean that there is no difference between an actor and a jolker or a trained monkey(sir please dont mind my meaning is not that you are a monkey but you came on programme for comments so these are my comments according to my knowledge and my thinking it may be wrong or right)I think it a very heavy task to perform according to saying of others either they will be my boss or my elder,so for my thinkings are like these as i described above.
Movies or motion pictures or any other electronic media programmes play a very big role(maybe a vital or major role)to build the career or grow the thinkings of a person in our countries like india and pakistan where most of the population are uneducated. Most of the people either boys or girls try to adopt the shape of the film actors and try to act like them.In such conditions there is a big responsibility on your shoulders to give the people a good lesson through your movies.
now something about your acting.Realy you are agreat actor i think there will be not any movie of your which i have not seen. You are tremendous in all roles.
I have not more words to say about you or about the role of an reasonable actor or directors or producers or other parteners who play a big role when a film goin to complete.
Again i say that i have no more words to say about you but there is too much inside me which i want to say.hope you will be come again on the programme and may i will contact you again.
Let me allow please
Best Regards
Javed

Peace Be upon On those Who Follow Guidance,
I grew up as a muslim child in Morocco. And as a big fan of your acting genius skills, i must tell you that i watched your film co starring Dharmendra in SHOLAY as many as fifteen times. I was very poor and i had to work in child labour to earn my money to watch your films. Today I am 45 years old and i have more sense than i used to be when i was a child. Mr Bachachan : I know you follow the Hindu religion and my question to you : Is it not time for you to read The Quran and seek the truth you never helped to find in your movies? Many thanks CNN for this greatest opportunity to connect with my childhood Hero.

Mr. Bachchan, congratulations on your Lifetime Achievement Award....well deserved!!! I'm extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to grow up watching your movies (and of course collecting all your greatest hits along the way!). I admire you not only for your great versatility as an actor but also for the passion, sincerety and hard work you've put into a long, stable and wonderful career......day in and day out. Thank you for entertaining us and sharing this gift of yours with us!

I do have a few questions for you. What are some of your most cherished memories of working in your earlier movies (70s-80s)? I mean which do you believe led to turning points in your career/life? Who were the greatest influences of your career?

Here's one off-topic....you have been married for a long time...so as a father what advice did you give Abhishek when he got married? :o )

Thank you for taking time out of a busy schedule to answer some of these questions. I wish you all the best and look forward to seeing many more of your current and future movies! Great to see you on CNN and I also hope you are able to work in a mainstream Hollywood movie that displays your talents to the American audiences.

Sincerely,
Rick C.

When Raj Thackeray labelled you as a traitor(or something of that order), instead of going with your beliefs and fighting against it you kinda surrendered (in an amicable way ofcourse), which i respect cuz a verbal slanging match with that retard is way below your dignity. However, wouldnt you think with your following and public standing you should have come out in support of normal mumbaikars who are sick to death of this crap abt 'marathi manoos' which ppl like Raj thackerays dont give two hoots about since its all for political gain.
Dont you think its about time indian politics got over this shallow idealism, this divide and rule policy and someone with power, money and mass following come out against these leeches and show ppl their true colors. Do you think it could be you or politics is not your arena??

Amitabh jee,

May be people expect a lot from you.
But your talk with Komal Khan from Big Boss was very sad and desperate when he was out of house. You did not ask questions which were supposed to ask.
Big Boss was not even in mood of throwing him out if the players were not decided to leave the house next morning. For small things other members were sent to jail.

It seemed to all viewers that he was a rich guy but that is not the category for excuse.

He was abusing and insulting members and made tense and scary situation in the house. He threw bottle to Rohit without any reason. And you did not bother to ask him why he threw bottle whereas he has not done any thing.
Your all questions to him were not very important to the viewers. It was just periphery not concerned kind of questions to him.
On the contrary you thanked him out of topic for his good hinking of good relation of Hindu and Muslim.

Indian politics is afflicted with quite a few malaises. some of them can be attributed to the quality of candidates that are fielded by political parties. You have been closely associated with a political party for quite some time. because of obvious reasons, this cannot be fixed unless all major political parties agree to some kind of unwritten code. Do you think they will ever be far sighted enough to make that a reality?

After the Miss world pageant that you and your company hosted in Bangalore, the proceeds were supposed to be donated to charity. If that was indeed the case, why did you and your company hand out the cheque in the first place?

I have very high regard for your acting skills and have enjoyed a lot of your movies.

Offlate (since last couple of years) we have noticed that, especially when he is interacting with media people, he keeps a very straight face and even the most light hearted queries are replied in most broodish way. He should know that we loved his laugh as much as we do love his other emotions. One trait less will definitely hurt his affable persona. PLEASE LAUGH AGAIN !!!!

One more for our Mr. Bachhan. Is it true that he and Rekha have a child?

Yoganand Netrakanti   November 10th, 2009 1253 GMT

Quite a few personalities in India made an impact on the psyche of Indians. To state a few Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation. Next is undoubtedly Amitabh Bachan from a cameo role on the big screen 'Sath Hindusthani' to the 'Kaun Baanega Crorepathi' on the small screen. How do see yourselfabout the achievements over the years?

Dear Big B,
I have always been an admirer of U and your films. I loved you acting from my school days in Darjeeling. I saw U in person in Barsat Ki ek rat when you were shooting in Darj. I liked Kala Phatar the most.
Long life and happiness always.

What keeps you motivated to your work even at this age, when most of Indians would love to completely relax during this period of their life? Do you have some Guru, whom you really worship?

grave yard   November 10th, 2009 1333 GMT

Mr. Tom ( better to say Mr. Tomb)
Do you know more than criticing people? Mr. Amit is great actor. Actor do turn to camara by professon not toward the man like you. Got it?

Trophie   November 10th, 2009 1334 GMT

I've become a great fan of hindi films and yours over the past few years. Since I'm from America, I know there is a following for it in certain areas, but some regions are still completely ignorant (in my opinion). How long do you think it will take for America to truly embrace your films? Or what do you think it would take for America to really appreciate what Indian cinema has to offer?
You're a great man and I wish you and your family all the best!

I really wonder to your natural abilities of attracting the people. It is my immense pleasure to ask you one question- as you have been gone through series of experiences in your life, what would you say about meaning of life and what is your perception to solve the current global crisis on peace and stability .

Thanks

No one beats you as an actor, not even shahrukh, salman, amir or saif, thats my opinion, but trust me you gotta grow as a human as well and not just an actor, u not inviting muslims was lowly of you, i respect u as an actor but not sue wot kind of mentality u possess, kind of un-indian

Manish   November 10th, 2009 1403 GMT

Mr Bachan, I am 52 years old, people of my generation they lived with you, you have been a great influence on our lives, as angry young man, or a lover or an ideal husband or a reformer . Why there is nobody else to replace you in the charishma you wielded on youth of those days ? Secondly as a politician, the whole nation gave you tremendous support, we all expected radical improvement to the state of affairs of the country, why did you back out of politics, when the nation needed you most?

Maitrie Koendan   November 10th, 2009 1406 GMT

Dear Mr. Bachchan

You like a celebrity around the world,
and a hero, especially for the less fortunate in India,
have you ever taken the time to think
about the poor part of the population of India?
And if you did, have you any idea for a solution?
Finally you have also taken part in politics !

Sheila   November 10th, 2009 1413 GMT

Amit abh has a rare combination of both talent and star power. He is an example of talent triumphing over sheer star power. My respect for him increased 100% after watching Deewar. Question: Who is your closest competetor in acting talent?

dave chukwuji   November 10th, 2009 1420 GMT

Over the years re-make of old movies have become a fashion both in Hollywood and Bollywood, what's your opinion about this trend and how would you rate the re-makes against the original? Specifically, how does the new Don compare against the old Don?
Additionally, do you foresee a partnership, a collaboration among the the three largest film industries in the world, Hollywood, Bollywood and Nollywood in the near future?

Manish   November 10th, 2009 1420 GMT

Amitji,

I have one more question from you, you are standing at a pedestal , nobody in India ever dreamt of reaching there, you are an icon as far as Bollywood is concerned , many of your fans still see themselves in you, where do you go from here? In my view, there is nobody like Big B, may God bless Big B, so that he continues to bring cheers to our lives. Amitji, Bhagwan apko lamba aur swasth jeevan de, meri prabhu se yahi prarthana hai . Apke swasthya ko lekar ham log bahut chintit hai .

Anand V.   November 11th, 2009 1717 GMT

Did you not promote Abhishek in cine field, thus denying him a career that he deserved elsewhere ? Weren't you nepotistic ?

Ola   November 13th, 2009 1751 GMT

I have fund memories of sneaking into cinemas in my early teens to see your movies. Myself and some friends had a wonderful time practising some of your acts. i wish you well. stay blessed.

Manish   November 14th, 2009 604 GMT

Amitji,

For every Bollywood fan in their forties and fifties , there is no other superstar other than you, a versatile actor, a very emotional person on screen, and what we hear about you , a very emotional person and a gentleman off screen. I can not forget the moment, when I had an opportunity to see you in person in Mussorie where you were shooting many years ago , and shook hands with you . It is indeed one of the most memorable moment in my life . I have always been interested to know what makes you sad, what brings happiness in your life? What are your lowest moment and great moments, memorable moments in your life?

Adisa Lasisi   November 20th, 2009 746 GMT

Congratulations Mr, Bachchan on this wonderfull award. As a teenager, I was watching some of your films with other GREATS like Shashikapoor and Dhamendra.
QUESTION: Are you close to these GREATS or know about their whereabouts? and Can you revive some of those great films like Sholay and digitise them so that we can start buying and enjoying them again?

Tunji   November 20th, 2009 1002 GMT

I saw Sholay @ 10, over 20years later i still shed tears when i see you die. One of my life goals is to meet you (i promised that 10 year old boy)!

What would be you consider to be the most important factor of your success?

Kelechi Onwubiko   November 20th, 2009 1650 GMT

Considering the success attained by Bollywood in so short a time, what can Nollywood (the Nigerian version) learn to improve its products and artistes?

shaban   November 20th, 2009 2139 GMT

I wanted to ask you inmany of your earlier films you stared with many other famous and popular heroes like Dharmendra and Vinod khanna and Shashi Kapoor, do you still keep in touch with them and would you consider working with them in any future movies?

Mohammed D Bamanga   November 20th, 2009 2156 GMT

amitabh bachchan u a an icon in india like micheal jackson in united states u have done wonderfully in educating the world through your

Alankar   November 20th, 2009 2238 GMT

Dear Amit Ji

You obviously are a wonderful actor, a blessed artist and a great human being capable of creating such wonderful things on screen by enacting them.

Why have you not tried directing a movie? You have obviously produced movies but we would like you to be at the helm of affairs of a movie and it would be great to see you create or shape up an idea or thought or a script.

It will be interesting.

Any thoughts?

(P.S.- Please call him Amit Ji on your programme, 'Ji' is a suffix added to a person's name in India as a mark of respect. Mr Bachchan deserves utmost love and respect beacuse he is so full of respect to other people when he speaks to them on TV.)

wrienda   November 25th, 2009 1646 GMT

I don't have a question. Just want to say this: You are trully a great and fantastic actor. Your contribution to indian cinema is enormous.
