Known for his outrageous chat show that covered both the weird and bizarre, you may be surprised to learn that Jerry Springer began his life in the limelight as the mayor of Cincinnati.

What would you ask Jerry Springer?

What would you ask Jerry Springer?

Born in 1944 in London, England, Springer was drawn early to politics after seeing John F Kennedy on television during his address to the democratic convention.

Years later, Springer joined the political campaign of Robert F Kennedy before his unfortunate assassination in 1968.

After taking an unsuccessful run for Congress, Springer was elected mayor to the city of Cincinnati in 1977 and served for one year.

But it is Springer's role on his former chat show called "The Jerry Springer" show that he is known by. With chants from the audience that call out "Jerry, Jerry, Jerry" and constant on-air fights from his guests, the show became an instant cult classic.

Today, Springer is promoting his new dating game show called "Baggage" which debuts on April 19.

Gay rights groups have expressed outrage over comments made by a senior Vatican official linking homosexuality to child abuse.

Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, who also serves as the Vatican's Secretary of State, made the comment during a news conference while on an official visit to Chile.

"Many psychologists, many psychiatrists have demonstrated that there is no relationship between celibacy and pedophilia but many others have demonstrated, I was told recently, that there is a relationship between homosexuality and pedophilia," he said.

Tony Green of the London-based Lesbian and Gay Christian Movement said Bertone's comments came as no surprise given recent controversial statements by Church leaders.

"Of course we're appalled by it but not shocked - people like this are bound to say this. It's a bit like comparing attacks on the Catholic Church to the Holocaust and all that. It is desperate people trying to come out with desperate answers," he said.

We want to know what you think.

What is your reaction to the cardinal's comments?
