'Big thinkers' joining the show

April 21st, 2009

A late take tonight on what's on the show.[cnn-photo-caption image=http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/images/04/21/art.protest.afp.gi.jpg
caption="Pro-Tamil protests in Paris, France."]

We'll lead with what appears to be the final throes of a civil war that's lasted more than two decades in Sri Lanka.

It's a story that spurs protests in France and defiance here in Britain where a Sri Lankan ex-patriate vows the rebel movement will live on.

Then: Initially the U.S. president said he wanted to leave a shameful past behind.

Now - it seems he could be shifting course. Our next connection begins in Washington - where Barack Obama says he's open to prosecuting Bush-era officials who devised harsh interrogation tactics - including many of those used on terror suspects at Guantanamo Bay.

So when do "harsh interrogation" tactics rise to the level of torture - and is it ever justified?

You'll hear from one of our "big thinkers" - Eric Margolis is one of a dozen or so panelists helping the show team explore the connections - or links - that matter.

Find more on the panelists on the Web site.

And: Anticipation in South Africa over new leadership. The rest of the world is watching and waiting. But not for long.

Voters head to the polls in just hours to choose a parliament.

The South Africa election could have a huge impact across the continent ... and worldwide.

Lots of other good Connections stories in the mix but no time to fill you in so you'll have to watch the show! 9p London time - don't be late.

Remember this is your show - we need your help to better connect us all to the stories that matter around the world.

Just need to verify a simple question..What would be the reaction of USA, UK and other European countries if Taleban supporters protest against the military action (which is known as wipe out terrorist) done by UK and USA in Iraq and Afghanistan..?????
LTTE is a one of banned terrorist group as the Taliban.
Would USA and UK governments and media will allow them to protest like this, waving flags and shouting for ceasefire and many more....
If a genocide carrying out for Tamils in Sri Lanka, then how comes the Tamils lives peacefully in Vallavaththa (which is the most populated Tamil town near to capital of Sri Lanka).
Anyone who has clear slight can understand the truth behind this made up stories. As the LTTE is now reaches to their end, their supporters who been having luxury lives in Europe now shouting to get some oxygen for LTTE.

I have to currect major mistake in your Connect Programme. You told a point "the srilankan ehtnic conflic since 1983". this point clearly showing you didn't analysis this conflic from the start. it was started in 1956 when Sinhala goverment implement the "SINHALA ONLY LANGUAGE LAW IN 1956". and other major mistake Tamil tigers not only asked Tamil homeland, All tamil people are asking that. can your CNN media ready to give your voice for call UN Public referendum from tamil people in srilanka and all over the world like KOSOVA? how you can tell Tamil tigers only asking Tamil homeland? Take a Public referendum from tamil people via UN. then after tell you points. thankyou

All These LTTE supporters want is the war to continue because more than 50% of tamils who live in other countries are living under Refugee Visa's so if the war ends they will have to leave there beautiful life's and come back to Sri Lanka.... so they will never want the war to be finished even if it takes 1000000 lives for it.... they really don't care about Tamil people.... at least show some respect for the countries that they live, who excepted them, who gave them a peace of mind.... They are like a bucket with a hole no matter how much u put it will never fill....

It is very disappointing that a well reputed news network like CNN broadcast biased reports. I saw today's (April 21, 22:00 CET) "Connect the World" report which sounded almost like a promotional clip of LTTE – the most dreaded terrorist group in the world. They are not freedom fighters.
As a journalist your should have at least brought the other side of the story to prevent your viewers being misled accusing Sri Lanka government (GoSL) of Genocide (I hope the Tamils know the real meaning of the word before they use English words)

Referring to th gentleman who accused GoSL of Genocide, listen to what Lord Naseby said at the Forum of PressTV:
    http://www.youtube.com/harshanack
    Quote
...that gentleman is talking rubbish if he is referring to the government. The only people causing a Genocide in Sri Lanka are the Tamil Tigers .......
    Unquote
I have parents of a Tamil/Sihalese mixed marriage. There is no discrimination of Tamils in Sri Lanka and they hold top positions in politics (even ministers), government institutions as well as private sector. If any such tamil person was killed it was by a LTTE suicide bomber/gunman/ambusher.
Hope you will do your research on both sides in a conflict and broadcast your report in a fair way.

The horror of 9/11 tragedy, the wickedness and unrepentant nature of the perpetuators does not justify the call for the prosecution of the Bush era officials. The people who's course the Obama administration is pursuing are unscrupulous and would get at anything to take another heat on the US.

The interogation tactics employed cannot be separated from the emotions and the pains that was brought on America; and more than ever the desire to bring the perpetrators to book was more overiding than whatever point Obama is trying to score

I hope the Obama administration isn't just short on memory and the American people (not the Senate or Congress) should allow this. I recommend any documentary on activitiies and planning that culminated into the 9/11 attack. This terrorists are cruel and cannot be engaged like you'll to for rational humans. If the Iran President can act so irrationally despite friendly overtures from the President, what would you expect from hardened terrorists who'd maximize any opportunity to deal another blow on the US.

I think the Obama administration is getting it all wrong and it's a pity. You are not dealing with humans, you dealing with beasts!

I agree, that terrorist must be punished hard in sentence but the point is, is everyone who is in Guantanamo a terrorist. I don't think so. I read a lot about this and many of so called terrorist are not guilty of any crime. So USA has to be sure that they punish the right one's.
And I agree with the big thinker of yesterday evening that everyone who has to undergo such a hell such as waterboarding, automatically admit that he is guilty. So what is the word guilty mean then.
And to everyone who is saying our superiors made us do such things, I would say, youre a citizen of a civilized, educated and free country, so if you don't believe in the way youre employer is working, then stop. Nobody is forcing you to join the army. My point is you are also responseble for what is happened.

I advise everybody to read the book of a German, with turkisch background, who was totured in Guantanamo. The book is called: In the Hell of Guantanamo from: Murat Kurnaz.

If you read this book then you see things in a different perspective and the word guilty is not so guilty anymore.

This world have to understand the reality of srilankan tamils. they can't give their voice for their rights in srilanka, tamil people who are living in srilanka they haven't freedom to give voice for their rights. we no need to explain what going to happen to that people by Srilankan Military. you know so many insidance in past. if you look out of srilanka, all the counties which tamil people are living they are giving their voice as free, because they got real freedom from those countries. what could you understand from this?............better way to proof it UN must call for a referandum from tamil people right now.

American foreign policy had a direct effect on the development of extremist sunny Islamic ideology.

And furthermore if anyone wants to know what the future holds, read Brezenskis Book.

I predict USA will become friendly with Iran, destablize pakistan and control Afghanistan to project power on to Southern border of Russia, for they hold a lot of Hydrocarbons.

Mass media will slowly start projecting this view.

Remeber real news is something that someone somewhere dosen't want you to hear, the rest is advertising.

Sri Lankan government is fighting against an Internationally banned Terrorist organisation called LTTE. No one ever utterred a word when LTTE was doing ethnic cleansing in order to create a mono ethnic tamil state, by killing thousonds of innocent people overnight. LTTE (prabakaran gang)and other tamil extremist groups are resposible to following and many more crimes against humanity.

    1) Killing more than 70,000/- people over 30 years and ethnic
cleansing by killing non Tamils on selective basis over the period.

    2) Killing many public leaders including an Indian Priminister, Sri
Lankan President, Many Sri Lankan Ministers, Women , Childern
    and innocent civilians

    3) Killing many pilgrims and clergy in Temples and Mosques while
    they were prying.

    4) Introducing human bombs/suicide bombers by brain washing
    under aged childern.

    5) Creating an air wing and a submarine wing and tranferring the
technology to other terror groups in world.

    6) Activly supplying arms and drugs to other criminal gangs over the
world by maintaing a commercial arm in addition to providing
money laundering services through their front end organisations.

    7) Human and drug trafficking over many boaders of the world. This is
clearly proven by the fact that many Tamils in western countries
have reached there as assilum seekers or by sponsorship of non
related tamil.( both these are large businesses.)

    8) Misusing funds given by NGOs and using them to build LTTE
    military power.

Do you ever support Al Quida or Thalaiban to create a seperate state in USA or in any other Western Country, no matter how hard they try to paint a different picture to the world.

PLEASE RESPECT THE FREE WORLD. DON'T SUPPORT TERRORISTS.
