LONDON, England - Emmy award-winning actress Crystal Chappell, aka Olivia Spencer on “Guiding Light”, joins us Wednesday to talk about her hotly anticipated new online drama.

[cnn-photo-caption image=http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/images/09/15/art.chappell.gi.jpg caption="Watch the show for an exclusive peek of Crystal Chappell's new series, Venice."]

"Venice," a California-based Web series, was born from global fan support for her popular same-sex love story in the long-running American soap opera which comes to an end this week.

With "Venice" set to pair Crystal once again with her "Guiding Light" co-star Jessica Leccia, the show is already causing a huge stir on the Web.

We'll have an exclusive - and eagerly awaited - photo from the first episode featuring Crystal and Jessica as their new characters Gina and Ani.

Send your questions and we'll put them to Crystal on the show.

    Hi Crystal:

As a longtime fan of yours and the soap genre we all see that its slowly dying out with your new venture of creating "Venice" do you see Web based dramas being the new medium of dramatic storytelling in the future?

Do you plan to create other projects beyond Venice?

Did you ever expect that your role on Guilding Light to have such an impact with fans or such a new found admiration that has happened?
    how you feel about that??

Many Thanks and all the best!!

Crystal, there are no words that could possibly describe how talented you are or what a big beautiful heart you have. Thank you for being so giving to your fans. We heart you!

My questions are : What is going to be the dynamic of the relationship between Gina and Ani ? What broke them apart and what is going to bring them together ?

Wow. Questions to Olivia, err, I mean Crystal. Well, the obvious one of course since it hasn't been posted yet (I think, I'm a slow typer):
-How do you feel about the lack of romantic kissage between Otalia? (Fans are outraged! As I'm sure you know.) I read an interview where you said that you respect "their" (TPTBs') decision, even if it's not the one that you would have made. Is that really how you feel? I mean reaally.
-How soon will we get to see Venice? Will it be US only?
-Will Venice heal all those wounded souls that Guiding Light has left in its aftermath? How much alike are Gina & Ani, Gani? Ana? and Otalia?
-Can Becky please be on Venice?

    That'll be all thank you.

    Hi Crystal!
I watched *every* episode when you were on Days.
When I was 13, I remember having to go on a family trip to Ireland. And this was right before your "death". I was so taken by your character, that my sister made a joke about how we would come back from our trip and you would be dead. Well, sure enough I get back... and there you are... lying in a coffin. I *freaked* out! But then I found out you were still alive... thank god!!
Anyhoo, my question is... Were you hesitant about starting Venice? Or was it a yes right away?
Can't wait to see Venice!!!! YAY!!

While I'm not expecting Otalia 2.0, with all this talk of titillation and panties, I'm getting concerned Venice may be LWord 2.0. Not that there's anything wrong with sex, but a lil' romantic build up to the sex would be appreciated. So can we expect more depth from Venice then the male fantasy version of lesbians hitting the sheets that we normally get?

    Dear Crystal,

Many thanks for your continued commitment to the gay community, not to mention your initiative, to put together Venice. I for one am looking for to seeing a genuine reflection of our lives and not the non-kissing bs shenanigans GL have been portraying.

Questions: Do you have any concerns, however, that you have had to use an alternate media source in order to show Venice- (i.e) that it's okay to show gay on the internet but not on tv? Would that not further marginalise the gay and other alternate communities, while tv executives gets to portray what they consider "normal" on mainstream tv? Or do you think any coverage is good coverage?

Hello Crystal from Sydney, Australia and thank you again for reaching out to fans.

I've got a couple of questions.

    – With the rising success of web series', in particular soap opera web series', does the 'Venice' team hope to use the web as a platform for cable networks to pick up the show or is it a hope that 'Venice' will remain exclusively on the web? If the former, how will that affect the international community whose access to the show (and their ratings potential) could be restricted?

    – Concerning the actual episodes, will the show feature certain characters (and their plotlines) in alternate episodes, but have Gina involved in each episode? Or will we have a consistent story played out each episode, like a regular television show, featuring most, if not all, the characters in almost every episode? Will there be several stories being played out simultaneously, or will we see a main plotline and minimal subplots, with all the characters involved in that main plot, much like 'Imaginary Bitches'?

Again, as a member of the large international community, thank you for reaching out to us. Very much appreciated.

    – Araz

    Hi Crystal,

Thank you for everything you've given us! You took SO MUCH care with the Otalia storyline and touched so many hearts! I believe you commented once that you're a big fan of love...my question is:

    1. What is you're favourite thing about falling in love?

    and

    2. If you could describe the relationship between Gina and Ani, in 3 words, what would they be?

    Thanks Crystal, you're a star!

Memorable performance on GL, Ms C, endless thanks!
'Venice' sounds lika a great success waiting to happen. Looking forward to it.
I'm curious: As of yet, Ms Turrisi appears to be the head writer for this project. When the success kicks in, as I'm sure it will (and who wouldn't rely on the opinion of a complete stranger from cyber space...right!)
are you and your TEAM Venice/Own It planning on incorporating some willing (and possibly able 😉 sidekicks in the writing team?
While I'm sure you wouldn't need the help, I'm even more certain that you and your team's enthusiastic efforts concerning
this project make for a potentially great learning experience for aspiring writers.
This is the impression I am getting from your dedication to everything 'Venice'.
I wish you, Ms Turrisi, Ms Royaltey and your outstanding cast much success and a great time together!
Cheers for being such a classy lady.

First I want to thank you for the wonderful years we have been able to enjoy Olivia on GL, it is truly sad to see it go off the air.

    My question:

Were you surprised at the response to the storyline of "Otalia"? More specifically at the response from the tons of lesbian viewers who have become "addicted" to this storyline? I am on your facebook page every night and it's amazing that in the past few months your page and Venice have snowballed with fans. Does it help you realize how many of us are out there waiting to have their story's told?

    Hello Crystal,
In the course of my life I've watched many actors on both screen and stage and can appreciate quality performances. I know it takes a tremendous amount of talent for someone to reach into themselves and channel emotion to create a character. I've only recently starting watching Guilding Light and I'm astonished with your level of acting ability! Truth is you've ruined my objectivity because now I compare all other performers (dramatic & comedic alike)with you.
I also admire your initiative in producing your own web series and look forward to subscribing.

My question are... How much industry support have you received for Venice? Have you been approached for other projects, i.e. movie or prime time roles? How does your character Carly on Days of Our Lives compare to Olivia from GL?

Hi Crystal, you rock! I have been a fan of your amazing acting ability since you first played Carly on Days of Our Lives. My question is in regards to the whole Otalia phenomenon. The chemistry between your character Olivia and Jessica Leccia's character Natalia has memorized so many viewers (both gay and straight) of Guiding Light. I was wondering if both you and Jess have felt the amazing chemistry as much as the fans have.....and best of luck in all of your future endeavors!

    Hello,

I'm quite possibly Crystal Chappell's biggest South African fan. She hasn't been on S.A. television screens since the mid nineties.

The internet has been brilliant. I prefer spending time on the net rather than watching television so when Crystal Chappell embraced the internet so thoroughly, I was thrilled. (Thanks for the tweets C.C.).

    My question to Crystal:-

If you could go back and change a decision that you made in terms of your career, what if anything, would you do differently and why?

Looking forward to the show. Going to be a treat.

    Crystal-

First off – you're awesome. Thanks for taking time to answer questions!

My question is: will you be offering more ways for the audience to be involved/interact with Venice? So far there's been the logo contest, music submissions, polls, clues, etc.(all great ideas).

Anything else planned such as feedback forums once the series airs? Deleted scenes and extras? Fan events? Etc?

This has been such fun so far. Looking forward to it!

I'm really excited about Venice, and have been delighted to see how open the Venice team have been in interacting with their potential audience. Thank you for being so enthusiastic about creating this show, and for being committed to making it easily available to an international audience (I'm in Auckland, New Zealand).

You've said you are delighted at the creative freedom allowed by webseries, but presumably there will be tradeoffs and limits to what you can do within this format. What are you finding those to be?

Also you've said Gina and Ani's character's are exes. How is Ani connected to other characters on the show?

    Thanks!

Crystal, I am a new fan and among the legions who blame you and Otalia for turning their brain to mush. Thank you.

Venice is wonderfully enticing and my question regarding this endeavor – 'Is one of your goals to make Venice financially successful so that the networks can see the web as a viable medium? If so, what is your strategy?'

    Thank you!

Thanks again for your commitment to good storytelling!

My question: Seeing a series (web or otherwise) with an all female production crew is always refreshing. Have you thought about this dynamic as being a positive influence toward seeing more programming showing REAL women's stories, and not just those as seen through the eyes of male network executives and advertising agents (who still seem to view women solely as targets for beauty and domestic products)?

What do you think will be the main theme for Gina the character? Will she be more focused on career or finding love or reconciling with family members? I can't wait to watch the web series, hope it's subtitled in English for the deaf viewers.

VERY excited about Crystal being on. Have been a fan since her One Life to Live days (and Silk Stalkings prior to that).

My question is what can WE the fans do to help 'save' daytime? Other than writing, calling, campaigning, going to the internet, etc, what can we do to get the right people to listen? Nothing worked to save GL and it seems to me it's the networks and executives are the ones killing daytime.

Looking forward to "Venice". Crystal & Jessica are MONEY!

Love you Crystal and can't wait for Venice.

Television, not just the soap opera genre, is changing. New media platforms, digital methods of delivery, changing demographics and expanding viewer habits all contribute to make current ratings systems, among other things, antiquated at best and woefully wrong at worst.

Is this where you see daytime production, as well as primetime, headed? To the web?

Hi, Crystal I have watched since your first stop on days of our lives when I was 14, and followed you since then. I saw early on where Guiding Light was going with your character, but thought, no, they wont do that...to my enjoyment and countless thousands also, they did, minus the physical side of the Otalia paring. My favorite ever storyline ANYWHERE!! TU VUGLIO TANTA BENE!!!

    my questions are..

    1. How much grey goose did you have to consume to help alleviate the frustration of no physical relationship between you and jessica leccia throughout the storyline..lol?

    2. How has your husband responded to the outpouring of devotion of your character and you as an actress?

    3. Would you ever consider any network offers for production of Venice such as Logo or showetime?

    4. Its a rainy night at home, your guys are out doing "guy" things, what do you do?

5.Why are you absolutely beautiful , and put the rest of us girls to shame??

    6. Do you and Jessica Leccia speak outside the work spectrum?

    7. With Venice almost around the corner, are you starting to feel the stress crunch and crazy happy anticipation?

    8. The fact that you are global, and have hundreds of fans sites devoted to you, does that interfere at all on the set of days of our lives?

    9. Has red always been your favorite color?

I just started watching Guiding light 6 months ago when I discovered the Otalia s/l on Youtube. I really Loved the writing then suddenly a lot of us (Otalia Fans) started to feel like there was some kind of censorship going on. It felt like someone put the breaks on this s/l. The girls weren't kissing and even the hugging became less or wasn't there at all.

Question: Can you tell Us why this happened? Or Do You know why this happened? & How do we know that Olivia and Natalia are really in love and not just confused friends?

    Hi Crystal,

I will so miss you on Guiding Light. You and Jessica Leccia were amazing together as Olivia and Natalia, which brings me to my question, how does it feel to be able to work with Jessica Leccia again on Venice and how is the Gina and Ani relationship going to be different than the Otalia relationship?

Thanks and really looking forward to Venice!

I am fascinated by new media, I find the most interesting and challenging entertainment via the internet. You are going this route with your new web series Venice. Traditional media uses the Neilson ratings which ultimately affect advertising rates to determine how popular a network television show is.....your cutting new ground, you are creating a new business model...what method will you as Executive Producer use to determine whether Venice The Series is a success or not?

And thank you for being so connected to the fans with your twitter account. I love that and have become totally addicted.

We've heard that Gina is a wounded soul and it will play out in her relationships. How will that dynamic be shown? Does Gina have bad relationships, superficial relationships – does she get involved with women and sabatoge the relationships? What are we going to see as her defense mechanisms?

I have to say, I am very excited about Venice and cannot wait to see it come to life! You're always so honest and generous with your time – it is very much appreciated.

Crystal, as a relatively newly 'crystalized' fan, I am in awe of your work, especially how natural and comfortable your on-screen relationship with Jessica seems.

As a heterosexual woman, is there a certain amount of 'awkwardness' to overcome, given the amount of physical closeness and touching that was portrayed between the two women in GL and potentially (read 'hopefully'!) how close your characters will be in Venice? Does the working relationship almost need to become platonically flirtatious?

    Hello Crystal

I'm part of your facebook group, I follow you on twitter needless to say I'm a BIG FAN.

Web series, wether they are comedies or dramas are quite popular and are becoming quite popular with the masses. They are free and they allow total creative freedom and I'm so happy you will be making a foray into this new venture. My question is

The state of daytime (particularly soap opreas) seems to be going be "dying" so to speak with soaps ( aka. Guiding Light) going off the air and ratings going down. With cable shows and webseries becoming the craze, do you feel that soap opreas can surivive network daytime televesion or is the soap opera becoming an antiquated industry? Can soap opreas still fit with the our modern times?

Hello Crystal! I think you are incredibly talented and so brilliantly innovative!! I especially love the collaborative nature of Venice and the way that you and your team have embraced social media so effectively. What you consider to be the benefits and challenges of using social media in this way? Does using new media merely increase exposure and viewership, or do you feel it can result in a genuinely better product that will resonate more with the audience? And on the negative side, have there been any challenges such as pranks, privacy concerns or intellectual property issues?

Thank you, and good luck with Venice – I know it will be a great success!!

Hey Stan . . . . As a new fan of yours (middle of June 09) you have knocked my socks off–I won't admit to any other absensce of clothing!) I have been a life long fan of GL (third generation) but had dropped back the last 10 years or so because of real life (I really hate it when real life gets in way of my TV viewing!! LOL) I really never, ever thought I would see my life story (or close enough to it) on Guiding Light of all places!! Just never thought they would go there and do it so well (won't go into the negative parts . . . Like lack of physical stuff) But the story telling ROCKED! Hate that it is ending! Will miss it!!

But glad to hear about Venice! Also glad to hear that Gina & Ani are NOT Otalia. That story is done and time to move on . . . . Also LOVE that it is not a "lesbian only" series. To me, that is NOT real life! In fact, I'm a lesbian who happens to have (or used to have) more straight friends than gay friends. Having been in closet for 30 years will do that.

QUESTIONS: What kind of photographer is Ani?? Group behind Venice seem like a blast–Is that real?? Any more information available on Hilary B Smith's character?? How many dogs in cast?? (LOL Or has the cast gone to the dogs?? LOL) Sorry trying to find humor today! Bad pain day! Last question: How long do you see this web series running?? And would you let it go to cable or pay cable (Showtime or HBO) if they wanted it?? Or (like I have read) too many cooks can ruin the dish or web series in this case??

    Thanks for including fans in this adventure–It really is an adventure & a fun one!! 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

From the bottom of my heart: Thanks for the embrace and love you have given to the gay community & your fans in general. Never got back from a "star" before! You rock this world and that is a good thing!! LOL 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 More love less hate works! 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

PS. Dogs are also very good & a life saver for people like me!! 🙂 🙂 🙂

At this time, your friends are donating their time for this venture. In your business plan, how much do you anticipate the first season costing? And what do you think it will take to make this a personal and financial success?

With a family dynamic, what messages will Venice be bringing to the forefront?

Given network tv shows have a few things to measure weather they are 'successful' – ratings for the business side , or Emmy nominations, critical acclaim for the artistic side, what criteria will you use to measure the success of Venice?

Having full creative control of the content and material of your story is very important to you and Kim and Hope, and being on the web will allow you to not have to work under the censorship and constraints of sponsors or networks. That being said, what kind of rating would you give your new masterpiece Venice.... a PG, an R or an NC17??

Are you hosting the videos yourself or using a site like YouTube (like Eden Riegel's "Imaginary Bitches" web series did) to help alleviate the stress on your hosting company? With the popularity of the Otalia storyline with the loyal fan base it has do you see all web series having to develop and court their particular fans on an on-going basis? So my question is, with gay marriage being such a hot topic, do you think that showing characters like Gina, in a everyday family light will help understanding and generally help the cause of human rights?

    Hi Crystal,

I love that I can be part of team venice and I'm just getting slowly! into the twitter mania. But I'm nearly never online when you are. 🙂
Can be difficult because of time difference and language.
So feel free to aks the questions in the proper way...

When season one is over and after that I watch the whole season every day once... how often can I watch it online till the second season starts? 🙂

What kind of photographer will Ani be? Magazine? Art? Nature?

Will you, Kimmy and Hope allow the fans to watch when you film outdoors part of the episodes? Will you announce on facebook something like... public filming dates?

Thanks and I hope Venice will be a big success so we can see a lot of seasons.

You seem to be everywhere, on Days of Our Lives, Producing and starring in Venice, all over the social media of Twitter and Facebook and forums and podcasts and blog interviews and ... and jumping into everything with both feet. Can you comment a bit on what kind of personal commitment that takes?

Oh, and color me thrilled that you're attending to the needs of an ignored international market that is starved for content.

And thanks again for ... blowing up my summer.

I am so excited that you are sharing your talents with us in Venice and I am thrilled to hear Gina will be a lesbian! Thanks for representing the gay community so well on Guiding Light and Venice!

What impression would you ultimately like for viewers to take away from watching the show about Gina and what part her sexuality plays in her life?

1st of all, thank you (and Jessica) for the beautiful portrayal of the Otalia characters. They touched my heart.
I was wondering what kind of research and/or preparation you do to raise the characters from the page and give them life. From the subtle looks and gestures to the bigger dramatic moments, it's wonderful to watch.

Firstly I'd like to give a huge thank you to Venice team for making Venice accessible to all of us international fans. For the question: since I think Ms Chappell has perfect comedic timing, and she really shines in scenes in which humor is brought forward, I'd like to know if we'll be able to see more of that side of her in Venice?

I was telling my sister the other day that in a year everyone is gonna know who Crystal Chappell, Kim Turrisi, and Hope Royaltey are, not just because Venice is going to be a hit, but because how you all went about it. All of you, including the other cast members and crew, are currently working for free, you never once had something bad to say about CBS and it's POSSIBLE influence in doing this show, and your proving that actors do care about what they put out there, that it's not all about a paycheck.

Where do you see yourself and Venice in a year? What sort or impact would you like to make with the show?

Thank you for Olivia. I loved her character as a mom and really enjoyed her attitude and humor. Will Gina have some of her attributes?

    Looking forward to Venice.

With that said, is there a part of you that deep down would absolutely love to prove them wrong with a successful launch of Venice?

Hello Crystal, I've been well and truly 'Chappelled' since earlier this year thanks to the kind peeps who post on you tube.

I've fallen head over heals in love with the characters of Olivia and Natalia (haven't managed to break this news to my beautiful husband yet!) and am overjoyed that you and Jessica will be working together again on Venice.

I know Ani an Gina are exes but I really, really, really hope they end up together!!!

Anyway, my main quesion is whether there is an address fans can send donations to in an effort to assist with production costs etc... Don't get excited, I'm not wealthy but I really appreciate what you are trying to do for your fans worldwide.

Lastly, you are without a doubt one of the finest actors I have had the pleasure to watch on either the big or small screen.

    Good luck with Venice.

    Crystal:

    1) How did you manage to do 3 jobs at once – finishing GL, beginning DAYS and developing VENICE? This in addition to maintaining your marriage and raising your boys. You must be an iron woman. What was a typical day like for you in the throes of it?

    2) I know that everyone is trying to figure out how to make the web work financially. I've read that the VENICE team is very cautious about what sponsorship manes. You surveyed your fans about a fee structure for VENICE. What did you learn? Were you surprised at all by the results?

    3) Can you tell us a little about Gina's relationship to the Colonel? I've read that they have a very complicated relationship.

Thanks for taking the time to answer our questions.

You never say no to an interview, you keep us all entertained with Twitter, you are acting full time on a soap, you are creating a web series, you have a family that you obviously give 100% to...I will quote you in one of your scenes with Jess from December of 2008 "You're a freakin' super hero!"

I imagine Venice the Series is going to be a great success, and I already see the creative venture and it's media attention received as a success of it's own, let alone inspiring.

There has been considerable discussion about panties, but I hope we get to see you in lots of jeans as well.

I know this isn't a series about gay people, but it seems the passion behind Team Venice has truly tapped into an intrinsic pulse of the daily lives of a diverse group of people. Do you see yourself, Hope and/or Kimmy building on that passion in other ventures which includes bringing awareness to LGBT life with such integrity?

If anyone can do it, I have great faith the three of you can.

Here's a question from a wife and mother from 'middle America' that's short and direct:

Who killed the 'Otalia' storyline on GL – was it the GL writers/producers; the network; the owners Proctor and Gamble, or a combination of them? It's important for viewers to know where the homophobia lies since other GL couples were given the 'right' to kiss at opportune moments, however, Natalia and Olivia did not.

Now my question: You have gained quite the loyal international fanbase through the Otalia storyline on Guiding Light, who will all happily tune in to Venice. This, however, is for the most part a specific crowd of gay and bisexual women who found out about the story through websites that cater to this audience. It's been said before that Venice is NOT a gay webseries, but how do you plan to get attention for Venice from international straight audiences, who might not even have heard of you or the other actors involved? I love the background idea for Venice. Everyday people dealing with life and all its intricacies and craziness. I hope the characters are as complex and complicated as real human subjects can be. I know the main character is openly gay, but will Venice touch on other sensitive topics that mainstream television might shy away from and push the boundaries since a web series is not subject to same standards? Also, if given the opportunity for a major network backing , would you three ladies relinquish your control based on a project that came from a labor of love?

It looks like Venice is part of a growing trend for web drama series. What are the main differences between production using a TV drama/soap format and that of a web series?

People say there is more creative freedom with a web series, in comparison with TV. But you still need to attract sponsors and/or advertisers, so how much creative freedom do you expect to have with Venice?

What influence (if any)has the international dimension of your fan following had on the creation of Venice?

What preparation will you need to do in order to portray the character of Gina in Venice?

What process did you have to go through, if there was one at all, when transitioning from Olivia, a character you've played for the last 10 years on Guiding Light, to Carly, a character you've picked back up after about a decade and a half on Days of Our Lives, to Gina, a character you've created with your writing partner Kim Turrisi on your upcoming web series, Venice?

For some asinine reason I caught pneumonia this May, and instead of being outside enjoying the weather and playing soccer, I was stuck inside for 2 weeks recuperating. During one of those very long days I happened upon the Otalia storyline on YouTube (via afterellen) and having all the time in the world, I curled up in bed with my laptop and watched every episode available. Turned out to be the best sick days ever! I didn't even notice the coughs and the disgusting phlegm any more 😉 Otalia-itis cured me. So thank you for that!

But anyway, my question is: Do you have any aspirations of moving to the big screen or do you maybe prefer the slow-burning/dramatic storytelling that soap operas/series provide?

    Hi Crystal,

    Greetings from Toronto, Canada.

First of all, thank you for everything you do for your fans, we love you for it.

You and your partners have called Venice your labor of love – with the cast and crew being friends of one, or all, of you. With regards to Venice and keeping it on the web, what will you need to do to keep it sustainable? what strategies have you considered to extend its longevity? What plans do you have for season 2?

    Thanks.

    Hi Crystal:

I have been watching GL since the days of Bert Bauer, Mike and Ed, etc. Sad ending to a great run. But, looking forward to Venice.

I know that you and the producers enjoy the prospect of having alot of creative license in the direction of the show, but has there been any approach from Showtime after the end of the L Word? They seemed to be able to do quite a bit that the core networks do not allow, but I surely don't know the ins and outs of that. Any thoughts there?

Could Venice be a stepping stone for that prospect? Also, will viewers be able to download the webisodes of Venice? Perhaps a way to make some money for the show?

You have a couple more characters to add to Venice for its 1st season. Since we know the series is going to be a sensational hit do you anticipate adding additional characters the 2nd season and/or (hopefully) keeping most of the original cast?

Will the series be available on DVD at the end of the season?

What "hook" will keep the new Venice audience that was expecting Otalia 2.0 (personally I'm very excited at getting to know new characters)

    Best of luck

On Venice, you get to wear a few different hats. you get to help create, produce, recruit actors/actresses, and you get to star as the main character, Gina. What has been the most challenging part of your new role and what do you look forward to the most regarding the series?

As always, I can't thank you enough for all that you do both on and off screen. Crystal, you truly are a remarkable person and I am honored to be a fan of yours.

    Hello from upstate New York!

    Three questions for you...

1 – Can you tell us...besides the United States, what country or countries do you hear the most from when it comes to mail from fans looking forward to your upcoming web series Venice?

2 – No matter what country these fans reside in, have you noticed any universal themes to what they write to you? And if yes, what are those themes? And are those real life themes influencing where you and your partners are taking the show?

3 – For viewers watching Connect the World but so far not familiar with your work...what can you tell them about your show Venice to pique their curiosity enough to watch it online?

Hi Crystal. My grandmother listened to GL on the radio, my mother watched it on TV, and I picked up and watched it in TV, on CBS.com and even caught it via podcast on occasion. You have been one of my favorite characters on GL for many years now and I absolutely loved the Otalia story line.

My question – what do you think old media can learn from this venture? Do you think they will be slow to adapt...perhaps too slow and end up someday and end up like the newspaper industry?

I look forward to seeing you and the other old GL cast members in Venice!

Firstly, I'd like to say that I instantly became a fan of 'Otalia' from the very first time it was suggested that I watch from a friend of mine. I had to catch up on the story and have been watching ever since. So congratulations on being one half of this very endearing couple!

My question surrounds the make up of the pertinent cast and crew of Venice. Who are some others who will be involved in the project?

Also, what are some of the logistics of the series (i.e. how frequent, how many planned webisodes, when is the series premiere, etc.)?

Finally, where, concisely, can we get more information about the series?

I am looking forward to watching this series and continuing to follow your career beyond Guiding Light. I appreciate your comittment to telling a story to the best of your (extremely talented) ability.

By the way, thanks for your freqent tweets! 🙂

    Crystal,

How will the plot of Venice play out? Is the focus of the show about the path Gina takes to find her way back to her true love and ex Ani? Do we get to take her journey with her and see the ups and downs of finding your way back to your one and only? Or is it about losing love and realizing that you can do it on your own when you thought you couldn't live without someone; is it about finding your own way in the world when you didn't know your own strength?

Thanks for all the fantastic years as Olivia Spencer!

With Venice, you are setting a new standard in terms of representation of same-sex relationships on soaps. In what other ways will “Venice” break the mold? Specifically, how important is racial diversity, both in front of and behind the camera? And, can you promise me there will never be a rapemance?

Have loved you since your years on DAYS, and am anxiously awaiting your return in October. I will surely miss you and your cast on Guiding Light as well.

Question: Do you see long-term plans to buy and produce additional web series for your production company–therefore, to keep it web-based. Or are your long-term goals to remain on the web and then go to television once the industry is ready for some honest to good story.

Sidenote: Whoever thought up the idea to create an interactive brainteaser to reveal actors in your cast was brilliant.

I would also like to thank you so much for the continued support you have shown us as a fan base. I have never known a celebrity give so much back before. It means more than you could ever know. First off, congratulations on your work on Guiding Light and on the new gig on Days!
I am however most excited about Venice and have a couple of questions:
It seems obvious that the model of network soaps is in deep crisis and not quite able to adjust to changed times – do you think it can be revived on the web, and if so, what changes need to be made?
So far, success for web series doesn't necessarily mean attracting as many viewers as possible but creating a committed fan base by targeting a specific group or market section, e.g. gamers for The Guild, often offering additional content etc. – are you following this model with Venice? If so, what is your target group?
And related to that: network TV seems unwilling to give lesbian storylines anything close to equal treatment, even though the success of Otalia shows that there would be an enthusiastic audience – do you think web series, and Venice in particular, can build a sustainable business model around filling this void?

    Thanks and good luck!

    Hi Crystal

I am a new fan and becoming a big huge fan. Thanks for being so genuine and open with us fans.

    Questions:

You said that in the beginning you choice to do this project because of the fans reaction to the Otalia storyline and your need to represent those fans that you felt were being underrepresented but as an individual what do you hope or expect to get from doing this project? (i.e. values, goals, long term fulfillment)

Will the Venice episodes be posted on You Tube or the Venice Website? If not on You Tube will it be okay to post them on You Tube or do you, Kimmy, and Hope want it all filtered from a central place?

What is it like being a producer on your own project and how is it different for you than acting?

How does it feel having such a wide coverage on this new project that you are trying to start?

How long do you expect the Venice episodes to be? And how long would you want them to be compared to what they will be because of the production model and budget?

As a fan I would like to say I just love how you engage and interact with the fans and get us excited about the series. Was that always the plan? And why did you decide to engage with the fans in such a way? Meaning, through the clues, pictures, Q&A videos, chats, and twitter and was it always important for you to do and why?

Compared to the experience of Guiding Light, being an actor, and an individual in the arts what do you hope Venice to be artistically? And what do you hope to bring to it and make it respectable?

In the first Q & A with Kimmy you said that it was a show that you would want to watch what makes it a show that you would want to watch and a show that you hope to get our viewership?

In interviews You, Kimmy, and Hope (the producing partners) said that Venice is a show about people and not straight people, gay people, or sexual people just people and the human experience and people’s lives as a result of the human experience. So how would you as a producer, actor, and audience member describe the show or what it’s about to people to who may decide they don’t want to watch it because it has a gay character?

How is Olivia different from Gina? What do you hope to bring to the character of Gina? What did you learn from playing the character of Olivia and other characters the last 25 years that you hope to bring to Gina? Is Gina a hard character to play compared to the other character roles you have played and where would you rate Gina on that Scale?

Your husband will be playing the role of Alan. How excited are you to be acting with him again and was it difficult to get him to take on this role?

How do you want people to describe the show?

I think it's so timely and important that you are doing this, given the social-political climate surrounding gay rights in America and around the world today.

I'm wondering whether your idea to do this show emerged as a result of the response from your fans who seemed to want and need more than they were getting, or if you have always been pulled to reach out to the gay community and have now found the perfect medium in which to do it?

My question is, with the freedom that you have with a web series, how do you and all those in the creative clawfoot tub with you (with bubblebath of course!) plan on bringing the stories together if you only have one character with Gina per webisode? Also, are the webisodes only once a week? I'm trying to wrap my brain around this....

    Thank you so much!

Crystal, thank you SO much for sharing your heart, talent and amazing career with us! I've seen you as Carly and Olivia and thru all the years continue to be impressed!

Your storyline on GL has taken us up, down and back around! Your final scenario has generated a huge following!

Since you have DOOL to go to and a family at home, what led you to do Venice? As a heterosexual woman it's great to see that you're open minded enough and have enough love for your fans to do this.

Thanks again for being so fabulous!!

I have heard that Venice episodes will be 5 minutes long. Is there any chance that this wil be expanded – like soon? In any case, if anyone can make 5 minutes worth 60 minutes in entertainment value, that would be you, you're a tremendous actor and a brilliant presence.

How do you really feel about becoming a lesbian icon? Do you realize that playing another lesbian role will increase your lesbian fan base and thousands of lesbians are dreaming of kissing you? I am asking this question because I was in a fan chat room and some of the younger women were really fantisizing about you and some of the straight women were really insulted. Does this offend you in any way?

Hello Crystal– I adored your work as half of the Otalia storyline but was outraged at the restraint put on the sensuality between the two women. I'm very, very eagerly awaiting Venice! Am I hopefully correct in assuming that this series will be very sensual?

My other question: You've been on TV for years and now the web... is there any chance that we'll ever see you on the big screen? I truly feel in the right role you could give Meryl Streep a run for her money! And now that you have a world-wide, loyal lesbian fan base, would you do a lesbian movie role? Any fear of type casting?

You have been immersed in the soap production model for 15+ years. At some point I had to kick myself and say what great acting and chemistry between the two of you. Getting people to believe in the story you are telling, comes from talent and hard work.

How has your life changed because of the attention your role has garnered? Even though you are married to an actor, how does he feel about the crushes that some gay women have expressed? And, what do you remember of your days in South Carolina?

Hi Crystal, When I am honest with myself, I have to admit that I am a selective Lesbian follower. I love Ellen, Bette and Tina from the L word, and now I am pretty obsessed with Crystal Chappell after discovering Otalia on Guiding Light. Before vowing to remain single myself, my personal romantic life only included women. Now I take great pleasure in experiencing romantic
situations vicariously through attractive couplings. So Crystal, for the
venice series , have you thought about the different female personalities to invite to the set that you may want to be romantically involved with when you are no longer exclusive with Jessica (Ani)? I'm looking forward to finally gaining some satisfaction seeing Olivia and Natalia become more physically romantic on Venice, but Crystal, You have infered that Gina (you) and Jessica (Ani) won't be exclusive on the venice series. The attraction to Jessica seems so authentic. What will it require from you personally Crystal, to generate this with another female?

    Crystal:
You are the best! Any of the following would be great!

    – What is the 1 character trait you insisted Gina have (i.e. intelligence, sense of humor...) & why

    - I know you're aware of the disappointment "Otalia" fans, like yourself, have towards the lack of physical intimacy between the 2. It's been suggested that lack of intimacy was because the powers that be did not want to alienate its fan base... Now, given that, how is Venice going to reach audiences beyond the gay community... say to the GL fans who are now looking for a new show?

–Setting aside the obvious difference between web/cable, how will Venice differ from The L-Word?

–SInce Web Series, what few there are, are not required to give viewer ratings or warnings, will Venice stay within, or very close to, the overall FCC guidelines or do you plan to make use of the freedom the web delivery allows? (i.e. language, nudity, subject matter) and how do you think that will impact your intended audience?

    Thank you!

    Hello Crystal:

I have been a huge fan of yours since you first aired on Days! I followed your entire tenure on there! Then I started to follow you on Guiding Light since the announcement of the end of the series! You are amazing! Use to watch GL in my teen years in the eighties! LOL! By the way I mentioned your name to my mother (who hasn't watched a soap since Another World) and she turns to me and said isn't she from Days of Our Lives! LOL! Had to explain that you been there, done that, and are planning to do it again! Even though she never really followed it she did remember the Carly story because her two daughters loved Carly and Jennifer from the nineties! I filled her in on your roles on OLTO and GL, and she remarked the playing Olivia sound the sanest! LOL! I am lucky that mom is so funny and open minded!

Anyway I was wondering a couple of things?

    1) How is your niece enjoying Hopkins U?
    2) Have you, your boys and Mick settled in, in L.A?
    3) Ever visited Ontario?
    4) Any chance Melissa Reeves will cameo, now that you are back to Days?
    5) Is there going to be a fee to watch your web cast? I hope not! If there is, will we be able to watch it though facebook or youtube?
    6) Will there be easy access for fans from different countries to watch you and your friends on Venice?
    7) Are the Three Musketeers (You, Kim, Hope) planning on a DVD release of Venice, Like Eden and Andrew have done with Imaginary Bitches?

Us Canadians have a bitch of a time accessing episodes from Networks if you are not American! They all want zip codes and we have postal codes! We are shit out of luck if you are not a resident of the U.S!

It is the same for certain fan clubs and special offers! The don't allow things in Canadian funds or access for us through the internet systems!

Thanks For Keeping Us Excited and Happy To Follow You Where Ever You Go! I follow you on the Otalia Site, Twitter and Facebook! Not to addicted but love to catch up when I can! Thank goodness for laptops and blackberries! Thanks for always caring for your fans and friends, your a very smart woman! Good Bless! Sheila! Aka! Chelly!

Kindly elaborate on the personality, heritage, age etc. of your new character on "Venice", Gina.

Have you and your production team decided on a suitable business model that "Venice" should follow so that it will be sustainable?

Some might say that your role in the same sex couple love story on Guilding Light has taken your career to new heights, but I would say that your ability to take a role and just completely become the character makes you an amazing person?

Question – Do you feel that your role on Guilding Light as Olivia in the same sex couple love story has set a standard so high for you as an actress, that it will be to much to expect the same or better performance from you in your role as Gina in the Venice series?

    Hello Crystal,
You're one of the few celebs I follow on Twitter that actually tweet back. Thanks for that!

I have great admiration for Soap actors as I imagine they have a rather enduring schedule to keep. No hiatus, and a show that runs five days per week as opposed to one. Throw in emotionally charged scenes and you have to be spent. How do you decompress and recharge?

Your GL storyline intrigued me. I might be one of the few heterosexual, married Catholics that struggles with the church concerning its doctrine on homosexuality (hope my pastor's not watching, lol). Even though it was touched on, do you think the issue would have been explored more thoroughly had GL remained on the air?

Your entrepreneurial spirit is exciting. You knew you wanted to do a web series, but diid you have any idea what that would entail? What has the been the most challenging aspect?

    Ms. Chappell,
Thank you for all you have done and are doing for your fans, and your wonderful performance as Olivia. We love you for all you do.

In the soap world, the 'big romantic payoff' allows viewers to overlook the sometimes unrealistic drama that happens to keep couples apart while building up to that 'big payoff' – that overthetop first kiss or fantastic roamantic first love making scene. Then the couple is together, and together fight against outside forces, whatever they be, that try to tear them apart. The classic example is Luke/Laura on GH that fought the Casadine's after they went through the drama to get together.

This has been an accepted norm, and it is a pact between producers of a show and their viewers. We viewers know the payoff is so much sweeter when it happens like this! However, no matter the reason, this 'big payoff' has not happened very often with same-sex couples, not just in soaps, but any drama. It is considered very rare and precious in the lesbian community when it does actually happen. This has led to the gay community being very skeptical when viewing same-sex storylines. So many straight people were attracted to the Otalia storyline, and could not understand during all the build up drama how gay fans could be skeptical because they had not previously followed any same-sex couples.

As GL did disappoint in this regard (after such a ground-breaking, wonderful, drama filled build up) once again, and now even straight viewers are a little jaded by it, how do you plan to combat this skeptism so that fans, both straight and gay, will allow themselves to become 'invested' in Venice and go through the drama that we all want in order to get to the big payoff?

Any thoughts on a good Halloween costume?

Best wishes to you, your family & friends, and all your endeavors with Venice!!!

    Crystal,

Your performances throughout the years have made me laugh, cry, scream at the TV and given me goosebumps.

With the Emmys that just passed, are you thining to next year yet? Have you thought about what your reel would be? I am sure a lot of your fans have their ideas.

Also for Venice, even though it is set in Venice,CA, Gina being a hotel designer can really take her anywhere, any plans to take the show on the road for upcoming seasons?

What characteristics do you bring to Gina from Crystal, or Carly, or Olivia, or Maggie?

Hi Crystal! I love the work you have done on daytime TV and only watched Days when you were on it for Carly and then Guiding Light for you as well. Thank you so much for being so open with your emotions and embracing your roles. I can't wait for Venice, thank you.

My question is this: Since you are by far the best actress on Daytime, do you have any desire to work Primetime or feature films? I think you would be wonderful in both!

    Hi Crystal,
First of all you are an incredible talent.(and your hilarious sense of humor cracks me up) . I am very excited about continuing to see you and a few other GL actors on "Venice". You all have incredible chemistry. I understand that everyone involved with the show will be working for free. That says a lot about all of you. I know you have other commitments so how will you balance your family, working at DOOL, and your new venture?

I absolutely loved your work on GL, Crystal, and watched solely because of the "Otalia" storyline. Thank you for that incredible performance.

My question: You've drawn some very renowned peers to join you on "Venice." Obviously, that speaks in part to their respect and affection for you, but what else do you think draws established performers to this new genre?

And if I may be so presumptuous as to ask another question: any interest in stage work? If so, what would be your dream role?

Thanks again, and color me there for "Venice"!

    Hi Crystal,
I have been a fan of yours since your first stint on Days. I am so sad that GL is ending, but it has been so frustrating to watch . I am so looking forward to the premier of Venice and finally be able to watch your amazing talent unencumbered by censors.

My questions are : When is the estimated premier date? Are you planning a premier viewing party in the L.A. area or elsewhere? If not how are you planning to launch and celebrate the premier of this groundbreaking show?

Crystal, I have to tell you the story of Otalia has touched my heart, there are no words, as a mother of 2, and a gay parent it was refreshing to see a love story, simply that a true love story. My question is how long to you see Vence to run if it has a huge following? With it being a new web series, the road is untraveled, so will it be deicided by viewers, sponsors. Thank you for your time and much love,, love the tweets btw.

Thank you, Jessica and the whole Venice Team for going above and beyond for your fans. I totally agree with Kimmy when she said that you and Jessica undeniably have on screen chemistry. You both are truly blessed with your wonderful talent.

    Hi Crystal,

Thank you for delivering such an incredible performance each and every day. Your ability to convey such a wide array of emotions and feelings with just your facial expressions and body language make you the quintessential soap actress. Your work is so deserving of an Emmy Award. I hope your efforts will be recognized next year.

Thank you for such a thoughtful and believable portrayal of a woman coming to terms with a part of herself she never knew before.

Also, thank you in advance for Venice. I can't wait to see it! I'm also looking forward to seeing you (and your husband and Louise Sorel) on DAYS!!

    My questions--

What are your short term and long term goals for Venice?

What needs to happen, from an audience perspective, for you to consider Venice a success?

What can your fans and supporters do to help to make Venice a success?

    Thank you and best wishes!!

I'm watching Venice because of the possible Gina/Ani pairing hoping I see that amazing chemistry you & Jessica shared on screen as Otalia.

Ok, Stan. Question about "Venice". Olivia's one liners were such a part of her and GL, providing a bit of comic relief and I dont recall (if I can remember back to my High School Days) Carly ever being relaxed enough to make a side comment about sleeping her way through a phonebook. So we get the incredible, fierce, serious Carly during the day but will we see the amusing, less intense humorous side of Crystal in Gina?

I have followed Guiding Light and Olivia for many years and I do not think the character, the show or even you, yourself, have ever received as much attention as you all have received this past year do mostly in part to Otalia – what does your family think about the Otalia storyline and attention you are getting from it and with the work you will be doing on Venice? Are you comfortable being a sex symbol even to the hetero’s out in the world? I feel we might be missing out on a lot of the fun stuff for sure lol!

    Hi Crystal,

    I admire you a lot.I

I have two concerns or questions for you about Venice.

    1) Why did you you say that Gina and Ani do not finish together?
A lot of fans have thought that it will be a BIG mistake. We deserve and want a happy ending.Remember, it was a big concern all the time with Otalia. (Guiding light)

Olivia was vey different that Natalia, what is the problem if Gina is different that Ani? That is not problem. They need to finish TOGETHER. Do not forget it!

    2) Will be possibe to have close caption ,because there are a lot of fans like me,that ESL. I enjoyed Guiding Light a lot,but cc is a great help for us. I do not want to lose any word. Please, let me know.It is very important.

Thank you so much for your great and professional job. You are amazing and of course, your co-star Jessica Leccia, too. Both did a wonderful job.

My question relates to the fact that you and Michael have two young sons who probably ask about the work that you do, yet your alter-egos have often dealt with pretty intense issues, such as murder and rape. My questions about the series are:

Can you tell me is Ani the love that went wrong and has colored all the rest of your relationships?

    Gina - Butch or Lipstick?

    Ani - Butch or Lipstick?

What can you tell us about Ani's character?

I'm curious about the production model you've chosen for Venice.

The new production model for GL garnered a lot of criticism, but I actually preferred it – once the camera guys mastered the art of zoom.

I think the new production model led to some really lovely outdoor scenes. Of those, the GoL scene following the WoD stands out as just breathtakingly beautiful.

I also think the the new production model allowed the actors to inject some spontaneity to the scenes. Ms. Chappell in particular has revealed a gift for physical comedy over the last few months which I found most engaging.

I have really enjoyed the almost improvisational quality that the new model seems to have encouraged. It draws good acting from good actors.

By contrast, the old production model used by many of the current soaps appears atrociously lit. It also seems to encourage a very specific acting style which is at times extremely stilted, at other times lazy, but often just plain bad.

So, what's the word on production?

    Thank you

    Hey Crystal,

I along with legions of other fans have jumped on the Crystal Chappell / Otalia / Guiding Light / Days of Our Lives / Venice / Facebook / Twitter bandwagon with both feet and am in awe of your talent and spirit.

My question is...how will you and the Venice Team (Kim, Hope, and of course Leslie Penny) market to both the straight and gay communities? There has obviously been a huge impact on the gay audience...which I applaud...however...I really liked how Kim spoke in a recent article (Mindschmootz) about the importance of blending the two...how will this be approached?

I truly believe projects such as Venice are going to make history...and at the very least, a huge difference...they already have!

    A second question.

I'm curious as to how Venice will be structured.

I've read elsewhere that the Venice team is anticipating five seasons over the course of the coming year.

Will Venice be structured in the manner of a traditional American soap? One continuous story line which can be broken down into story arcs centred around individual characters or groups of characters? No end, per se, just an endless reshuffling of the deck.

Or will Venice be modeled more along the lines of a telenovella? Each season having a beginning, a middle, and an end? Each season constituting one 'volume' of the larger series?

Has the fact that Venice is to be a webseries (at least initially) influenced how the series will be structured?

    Crystal–

My question stems from the stigma pertaining to actors/actresses playing gay in Hollywood. Have you ever worried that playing a character with a same-sex love interest could harm your career? What are your thoughts on those who avoid playing queer characters?

Best of luck to you with "Venice" and "Days of Our Lives"! I've grown up watching Olivia's antics on "Guiding Light" and have always been a fan - I can't wait to see what's in store for us!

First off Crystal, thank you, and the entire cast and crew, for the many years of dedication to Guiding Light. I will miss the show and the entire cast. Olivia was a great character. For someone who only knows your work on GL, I look forward to your return to Days of Our Lives and getting to know Carly 2.0.

In addition, all of your fans, no matter their orientation, cannot wait for the premiere of your new web project Venice. Thank you for going ahead with this idea.

My questions: While I think that web-based series are the wave of the future, if Venice caught the eye of a network for a primetime series, would you consider this option? Or would you rather have the support of sponsors to keep it on the web, and have the creative control?

    September 16, 2009 at 4:39 am | Reply

There is a general sense among many GL viewers that the Otalia storyline has been subject to censorship.

In particular, criticism has been directed at the lack of any physical intimacy or of anything remotely suggesting a sexual relationship between the characters of Olivia and Natalia on GL.

Even some among the straight audience have begun to notice the lack of intimacy, and to wonder why.

Obviously, I understand that, as the owners and producers of the series, the Venice team are free to represent whatever relationships they wish in whatever manner they wish.

I am curious, however, as to the issue of content and the Internet as a medium. Are there really no rules about content? No laws, domestic or international?

On a related issue, will the Venice team take it as a mark of honour if Venice should be banned in China, Iran, Saudi, Texas?

Have to admit that, after the disappointment of Otalia, I'm rather hoping that Venice will be racy enough to be banned in Boston.

With most of the roles you have played, you seem to have the ability to convey such realism in your characters without the necessity of a lot of dialogue or "acting" the part. How much of that is a part of your earlier teachings with Sanford Meisner? What was the greatest lesson he taught you?

As a gay woman, I cannot thank you and Jessica enough for the work you have done on Guiding Light. To find representation on a soap opera, a medium that has traditionally been, well, traditional, is truly inspiring for someone struggling with these very same issues. The love story between Olivia and Natalia was told in such an honest and meaningful way, touching old and new fans (me!) alike. Many many thanks. As for my question, how has it been working with Jessica and the rest of the Venice cast in this new medium as compared to your experience on daytime television?

What freedom with you have with a web series – what possibilities does it open up that you may not have with a network series?

Why do you think fans of Otalia and Venice feel it is so important that a physical side to same-sex relationships is portrayed on screen?

    My questions are:

    1. Web based programming is a direct way for an artist to reach an audience. How important is it for you as an actor/artist to be able to have the artistic freedom to communicate directly with an audience that the web allows?

    2. You are playing the character of Gina in Venice. How are you similar to the character of Gina and how are you different from the character?

My question is, did your experience with the Otalia storyline compel you to pursue the "Venice" project (because of the problems with the way Otalia was portrayed) or were you thinking about going down this route prior to your involvement with Otalia? I don't necessarily mean the webseries aspect of the project, but the idea of featuring a gay woman as the main character. Basically, I'm wondering if the Otalia experience led you to want to portray gay characters (specifically gay women) in your webseries?

Is CBS purposely trying to rub salt in our gaping wound by featuring your kissing Christian LeBlanc on their website, while Otalia fans hit F5 day after day in hopes of progression beyond headbutting? Recognizing fully that this was YOU and not Olivia, it is nonetheless bizarre that CBS posted this knowing full well the frustration of Otalia fans in the sterilized asexual Otalia relationship, juxtaposed with every other character on the show making out and even engaging in a kissing contest.

Why would CBS feature your kissing LeBlanc other than vicious homophobia and to say a giant FU to Otalia ?fans.??????????????????

Traditional soap operas seem to be dying. Why do you think this is happening? What do you think can be done to save soaps? Will 'Venice' address any of these issues?

Can web based scripted stories generate enough revenue to survive? I ask this because I see TV going to cheaper "reality TV" type stories. I personally don't like this at all. I love serials and scripted shows – especially if the stories don't talk down to audiences. Can scripted entertainment generate enough revenue to give crews and actors a decent income and live on the web? How can we as viewers help scripted serials on the web be successful?

And will "Venice" have more the feel of the former, the latter, or (perhaps befitting its new status online) something new altogether? Moreover, as an online production, "Venice" will have an international viewership from the *start*. Will not (necessarily) being held to US television conventions have an impact, and how so?

Are you surprised at the international support your portrayal of Olivia on Guiding Light and your current project Venice has received?

Venice is clearly a labour of love – none of the creative staff or actors are being paid. Have you managed to obtain sponsorship or funding for Venice in the corporate world?

When will the Venice on-line store for the show open?

You've got your fans helping design the show's new logo and posting their own music for the show. Will you be writing an interactive story with the fans – changing the flow depending on fan's views, or is the plot set?

Hello Crystal, I was well and truly 'Chappelled' earlier this year when I discovered the 'Otalia' storyline on you tube, thanks to the wonderful peeps who upload.

I've fallen head over heals in love with the characers of Olivia and Natalia (I haven't managed to break the news to my beautiful husband yet!) and was overjoyed to hear that you and Jessica will be working together again on Venice.

I understand that the characters of Gina and Ani are exes, but I really, really, really hope they end up together!!!!

It's a real shame that the characters of Olivia and Natalia weren't afforded the same level of intimacy on the show as the other heterosexual couples. In the UK it's not really a big deal to have two women kissing on screen and we've had some wonderful dramas with very positive, happy endings. My point is, I've waited for Olivia and Natalia to kiss for such a long time that I don't think I could cope with Gina or Ani kissing any other women!

Getting to my question – Is there anyway fans can send donations to help with production costs? Don't get excited, I'm not wealthy but I really appreciate what your are doing for your fans worldwide, and I hate the thought of you all working for no pay.

Lastly, I'd just like to say you are one of the finest actors to grace the large or small screen. Your performances are breathtaking and your ability to deliver humour ...PRICELESS.

    Good luck with Venice.

You have a remarkable body of work from over the years. Thank you for your commitment to the character's stories and to the fans of the shows that you have been a part of. What attracts you to the genre of daytime television versus primetime television or movies? If you had the opportunity to do anything in life, other than acting, what would it be and why? I wish you a success filled future. Thanks.

    Hi Crystal,

You are an amazing actress and a wonderful human being. Your devotion to your fans is truly admirable and received with much heartfelt appreciation.

My question is, being as involved as you are with your family, career, and your fans, do you ever feel overwhelmed by it all or any pressure from trying to please everyone? Do you ever take some time just for you? You're awesome, take care.

    Hello Crystal,

thanks for reaching out to the international fans like this. This in itself basically already answers my question of whether you'll be taking us into consideration in planning for "Venice".

Little concerns like, will you take into account that not every European has a credit card. So while we would be willing to pay for "Venice", we might not be able to – and getting scared to be left out.

By the way, is there anything an outsider should learn about the real town of Venice Beach before watching the show?

Thank you again for Otalia. And good luck with all your future projects.

    Hello Crystal

Also from me a big thank you for telling the Otalia storyline the best you could. The things they didn't show, were felt by you and Jessica's acting skills. it has been one hell of a ride and I will miss it.

The fact that you as a well known straight woman, stand up for the visibility of gay people is very important. We need each other so all voice's can be heard. Thank you for being my voice.

I have two questions for you:

    1. How do find the balance between your family life and career?

    2. If you could rewrite one Otalia scene, which one would it be. And how would you have done it.

I wish you all the luck and love in the world.
Warm greetings from Clementine (The Netherlands)

Hello Crystal. Living in France and having discovered your work through the Otalia storyline, I would like to congratulate you for your amazing talent as an actor; as well as to thank you for the many, many hours of great entertainment.
Looking at the Otalia clips, I get the feeling that you improvised/ad-libbed (with great success) a lot (please correct me if I'm wrong). Is this something that will be encouraged as well in Venice? Or will the actors be more constraint by the script?

Also, could you please tell Jessica Leccia that she rocks too? 🙂

Many, many thanks and best of luck!

What do you do for yourself to when "the world is too much with us"?

    Crystal...greetings from upstate New York!

    Here are my questions...

1 – Outside the United States...what country or countries do you hear the most from in regards to the fan mail you receive...who know about Venice and are looking forward to the debut of your web series?

2 – Across the board, what seems to be the universal theme or themes you hear from your fans in regards to their correspondence with you...and are there plans to incorporate what they are sharing with you in terms of some of your web series' storylines?

3 – For viewers of Connect the World who have not seen you and your talent in action...what can you tell them which would convince them want to watch your online series?

    1. Is this your first time venturing into behind the scenes work? In the future, do you see yourself continuing to both act and produce, or do you think you'll move to producing full-time? I for one hope to see you in front of the cameras for a long, long time!

    2. Do you anticipate that Open Book Productions will one day oversee an empire of multiple series, or do you all plan on focusing on Venice and its following seasons only?

Hi Crystal. I think you're wonderful for too many reasons to list.

    1. How similar do you think the transition from TV to the web is as compared with the transition from radio to TV? Are there lessons to be learned from the latter?

    2. Will Venice support other LGBT issues? For example, the issue of marriage equality is huge in the U.S. (not just an LGBT issue) – will Venice be "present" for this issue and others?

I wish you the best in all your ground breaking endeavors. Thanks.

I have no doubts that you are the most talented actress I´ve ever seen. It seems to me that you are also a fine business woman.
Do you want Venice to be the begining of something big on terms of a new model of entertainment? Or it is only a gift from you to your fans all over the world? Or both?

    1. Producing this series for the web and having complete creative control over it's content, will "Venice" push the limits that TV has long censored and will it take us to places that have been long been considered taboo, or even controversial? How will Venice intrigue audiences and keep them coming back for more?

    2. One of the major problems that producers have when creating a web series is that they are unable to attain a dedicated and steady audience base. What sort of business or advertising model will you be use to draw audiences? Would you consider viral marketing, that is, advertising actual episodes on other well-trafficked sites such as Youtube, Faceboook and MySpace in order to spread the word and lead them back to the original website to watch the rest of the series?

Ratings determine the success of a television show and box office receipts determine the success of movies.

Web series tend to target a niche audience and money doesn't appear to be a driving force for web series makers so what measurements are appropriate to determine the success of failure of a web series or do we not yet know how to qualify a web series success.

Hi! As a former actress, I'm amazed at what you've been able to do on GL, in particular, under what must have been less-then-great conditions (ie few or no rehearsals, etc). I think you'd be great for the stage, doing challenging work like Chekhov. Ever thought about it?

    Crystal,

Got a couple more questions 😉

A lot of promotion for tv/movies is generally done by actors visiting talk shows, giving interviews to magazines etc. Now that you're creating a webseries, will you use that same media to promote Venice, or will you be likely to focus on promotion through the web? If the latter, just how do you plan on doing that?

One of the things that drew a lot of people into the Otalia storyline, was the fact that it focused a lot on family. Right now there have only been adult actors cast for Venice. Do you think it's likely that, in the future, there will also be kids added to the mix, not specifically for Gina, but for any of the characters?

You and I are the same age. When we were kids little girls not only watched their parents, but movies and TV, particularly daytime TV to learn about relationships. What were your biggest influences?

I recently learned that "Dynasty" star Linda Evans was on the British TV version of "Hell's Kitchen." If you had the time, aside from all of your work projects, family and friends, which reality show would you most like to participate on?

As a kid watching Star Trek, Lost In Space, the Jetsons and other futuristic shows like that...did you really think that we'd be talking to each other through a little box when we were adults? Now we need to work on the teleporter!(smile)

An indisputable fact of daytime tv is that you are the sexiest woman in soaps today. You are so sexy, in fact, that I believe you can arouse a bowl of breakfast cereal. I also believe this is organic and not something easily pushed aside; even for an actor of your talent. Pondering CBS's decision to censor a kiss between Natalia and Olivia the conclusion I reach is you are not capable of delivering a pedestrian kiss (what the censors would require) and this is the reason CBS pulled the plug on a consummating smooch. True or false?

You were a major player in the ground breaking Otalia storyline in Guiding Light that really excited a fan base (which I am proudly a part of) that deeply respects you as an artist and person. I genuinely appreciated Jill Lorie Hurst's vision and the depth and time taken to develop the story of the two ladies – Olivia and Natalia. The great attention to story- it was about far more than the physical relationship- won my respect as a fan. I wouldn't have been offended by a bit more pysical intimacy, but I was proud that the center of the story was about FAR more. It was rich.

Now you are preparing for Venice and the buzz is epic already! Realizing that there's no perfect solution for every person's ideal, how important is “story” for Venice?

My question is: Given how it seems that GL started something wildly promising only to have it fall flat story wise, how important is the follow through on the story (for Venice) for you?

Should Venice ever get picked up by a network, how would you handle network standards and practices when they conflict with the story you want to tell, or the part of the story you feel is necessary to make it complete?

    3. Will the promised kiss within first 30 secs be more then G/PG rated?
    4. What is your own gauge for success for this first episode?

    Other questions:
    5. As a tech savy business woman, how do you see yourself taking advantage of "new media", such as the whole social networking explosion, for your career?
    6. As an older woman in the entertainment industry what do you see as your main challenges in staying successful?

During the filming of GL, where scenes are filmed out of order, was it difficult to maintain the emotional continuity of the storyline?

Would you be willing to take donations from those who can afford to do so? Maybe an incentive to donations, would be autographed pictures , or mugs or t-shirt from Venice, for example?

    Hi Crystal,

First of all I'd like to say I'm excited to see your new adventure take off and I'm really looking forward to this new drama medium.

My question though is cost. Are you going to be able to find the backers and advertisers to keep your online drama free for the public or will we have to subscribe?

Personally, I wouldn't mind watching ads during the online show if it means keeping it free. Another thought could be to offer it both ways, like some of the online gaming companies do. Have ads for those who don't mind and for those who do, let them subscribe for ad free episodes and possibly additional perks.

Congrats again for the launch of this exciting drama!

What is your favorite thing you ever did to Jessica Leccia to get her to crack up and break character in a scene and vice versa?

Your ad libs are legendary and rightly so! What is your favorite ad lib and what would you have liked to ad lib but held back? We won't mind if you say it now!

    Best wishes,

I am 47 and I have not watched a soap since high school. They were too over the top and ridiculous to spend time on – HOWEVER, I inadvertently stumbled onto Otalia while on YouTube and I have devoured every episode of GL that I could find online since that relationship started. I even stayed up to 3am one workday because I could not get enough. I kept trying to find the beginning and went back to 2007. THAT is how powerful your and Jessica's relationship affected me. The chemistry between you two was amazing and kept me watching the show. It was not overacted or contrived. Thank you for that. The story line covered issues I have struggled with from religion to the "Rafes" in my life. I love your humor ( coffee? Latte?) and the easy way you two laugh – it is beyond acting – it is seamless. Fantastic. Again, thank you both.

Question: WHEN is VENICE going to launch? Any idea?

    Hi Crystal,
First of all, a Big Thank You to you and Jessica for doing such a marvelous job with the Otalia story line. It will stay in our hearts forever. You are one of the few that excel at your craft. Wow!

    My question for you is,
Why are the Venice episodes going to be so short? I read somewhere that they would be around 7 minutes per episode. Is this because of limitations faced by a web series or just a practical decision made by you all, the producers?

Thank you for taking the time Crystal and all the very best to you.

One of the reasons blamed for the demise of daytime soaps is that more women are in the work force and not home in the afternoons to watch...I think it's because of the poor portrayal of women in the soaps...Who wants to watch the silly triangles..maneaters...baby switching...get pregnant to keep a man...UGH...terrible images of women..

Why do you think women have stopped watching soaps??
What kind of changes do you think the soap opera industry needs to make to draw women back into watching soaps??

I'm guessing you haven't since the world hasn't exploded. I'm sure CBS was right about neutering your character – else the whole world exploding would have been on them...

Question for Crystal: From the little I've read about you wanting to do this series after the storyline between Olivia and Natalia on Guiding Light – what exactly do you hope to accomplish on Venice that has yet to be seen or given proper treatment?

It's so good to see Crystal interviewed on a channel I can view in the UK!

    My questions:
Does it bother you that Guiding Light's Olivia and Natalia appeared to end up as friends sharing a home and childcare responsibilities (a la Kate and Allie), instead of the actual romantic couple they were expected to become?

The homophobia is quite apparent in American TV networks, particularly as demonstrated by Guiding Light. Are you concerned that your career will suffer because of your involvement with Venice, and your portrayal of a believable lesbian character?

    Crystal,

You just recently received permission from NBC/Days of Our Lives (DOOL) to play the character "Gina" in "Venice." I have several questions about that.
Did you know that you were going to do "Venice" before you signed your contract with DOOL and if so, why didn't you have permission to play "Gina" written into your contract?
You are the main draw for fans who are going to follow "Venice." What was your Plan B if NBC/DOOL hadn't given you permission to play "Gina"?

    Hi Crystal,

As a lesbian-media-freak and genderstudies/queer studies-student I could not stay behind on Otalia and obviously like so many I got captivated and pulled in like a crazy person. However, as I always do, I use things that keep me occupied in my studies and therefor written two essays (including my graduating thesis) on or using Otalia.

My question is, did you know that you are part of something that is academically studied and how do you feel about that?

Also, would you like to read my thesis? (just kidding on that last one).

I've heard that actors take a little part of their characters with them when the show/movie is done. If true, does this mean that Carly and Gina will have a little of Olivia in them? I mean, you evolve. The characters must evolve too. Carly won't be the same person she was when she left Salem.

As a long time soap viewer I've been disappointed by the lack of character versus plot driven storylines so I was very happy to find just the opposite on Guidling Light with the Otalia story. I found that as a straight woman I connected with the slow building romance & a couple I could root for, something that had been definitely lacking in recent soap storylines. As a result I've been happily connecting with others who've loved the storyline as well. Some have questioned my nvolvement or love of the storyline and don't seem to understand why I as straight woman would love it too. My question: with Venice I'm assuming that to be successful, it will have to reach out to all populations of people – gay, straight, families, singles, couples, etc. What are the plans for addressing that on Venice and/or do you personally see it being an issue since it will reunite yourself with Jessica Leccia, who played your partner in the same-sex story on GL?

    Hi Crystal,

Having been only recently introduced to your acting talents in March of this year I have sat and watched hours and hours of youtube catching up at the expense of my poor hubby who has had only the dog for company but I can say it was worth it the Otalia storyline and the character of Olivia Spencer have been fantastic.

    Now to the question

Music has played an important role on Guiding Light using new and unsigned artists will the music be as important on Venice and will you be introducing us to some new artists?

    September 16, 2009 at 4:38 pm | Reply
  487. Rachel

    Hi Crystal

Music played such an important role in so many pivotal scenes in the Otalia storyline. Several independent artists were used that most viewers such as myself were unfamiliar with. While you have asked fans to submit original music do you plan to continue to use independent artists in Venice as was done in Guiding Light.

Prime time programs have adopted and modified the typical soap opera format. Will Venice follow a similar format with all the drama/humor, angst, leveling off, resolution? Will Venice be a continuous open-end narrative?

My question is really based on some of the learnings that you will take from the perceived mistakes made by GL with respect to the lack of physical intimacy. In some quarters this has upset fans of the storyline including some in the gay and lesbian community.

    Hi Crystal,
I sadly, wasn’t introduced to the guiding light or your character until the OTALIA story line came up. I learned of you from lesbian websites that had gotten excited about another portrayal of gay women on daytime TV. I’d only had AMC for years.

Considering u weren’t the first “gay " couple to be on daytime, did u expect your character to develop further, Such as kissing or to be shown in the same bed, Things that were being put on TV, just on another network?
Have u ever at any point in time, the very beginning or the very end seeing how OTALIA was handled, regretted the turn that your characters relationship with her best friend took?

I wish u much success with Venice

You did a great job with what I'm sure were lots of challenges and limitations placed on you and the storyline with regards to showing affection between the couple. How will Venice be different in its portrayal of gay/lesbian characters? Will the emphasis be more on their general day to day lives or their love lives/dating relationships? Hope that we get a balance of both because I don't want to see a rehash of the L Word, which to me focused too much on being sexually provocative. Love you for doing Venice for your dedicated fans! As a nearly 20 year admirer of her work, it's lovely to see her not only doing something that she loves but also receiving the acknowledgement and praise she deserves for doing it.

It's perfect time to make some plans for the longer term and it's time to be happy. I've read this submit and if I could I wish to counsel you few interesting things or tips. Perhaps you could write next articles referring to this article. I want to learn more issues about it!
