Born in August 1952 in Bell Ville, Argentina, Ardiles fell in love with football at an early age.
In his hometown, he would play football on the street and earned the nickname 'python' for his skill and agility.
Ardiles started his professional career playing for the Argentine club team Instituto de Córdoba as well as playing for Club Atlético Belgrano and Huracán.
In 1978, Ardiles played for the Argentine national football team during the FIFA World Cup which was also coincidentally played in Argentina.

After 1978 when Argentina won the World Cup in style and you came to Spurs I have always supported Argentina as my second team. What went wrong against Germany, Not one decent shot on goal from 3 of the worlds greatest forwards!
Oswaldo,
Do you think Loenel Messi was at his %100 in the world cup games?
Argentina (and R.Central) need a new Kempes to win?
Mr. Ardiles -hope you are doing well ... as a Dutchman I'd be interested to know whether you believe Holland had a real chance winning in 1978 ... or whether it was predetermined that Argetina would win.
On a personal note : you'd make a fine coach for Argentina for Holland to defend its title against in 2014
Very best, Willem
Mr. Ardiles:
My question is...seeing all the bad feelings that Diego Maradona's behavior elicit all over the world...do you belive he shoul be Argentuna's DT for four more years? Were you satisfied wuth his overall performance in this world cup? Is he an asset or a liability to the Argentinian team?
Thank you for your answers and the years of good futbol tou gave us.
