My moral compass in life was set early by my Mum. She spent nearly 50 years teaching disenfranchised kids in the UK, many of them young girls, many of whom who were newly arrived in Britain with no education, often from families who didn’t encourage their participation in school. My memories as a youngster are of mum working tirelessly to ensure the kids she taught got the same right to a decent start in life as my brother, sister and I did.
Mum has always said: Education is a Right – not a Privilege. And yet in 2013, the fact is there are 61 million children worldwide without even a primary education, of which 32 MILLION are girls.
It’s time to change that sorry statistic.
Join me Saturday in London when we’ll be live on TV and online at a star-studded concert which aims to raise awareness for The Chime for Change campaign co-founded by Beyoncé. The gig will raise funds for more than 150 projects that provide education, healthcare and justice for women and girls’ in 70 countries around the world.
